Mom's
Mariposa
I couldn't
resist doing this design again because it reminds me of
my mother. When I was growing up she had a collection of
butterflies in a frame that I was very fascinated by. I
always thought it was so pretty, and as most little girls
do, fell in love with butterflies. This large beauty is
against a reddish brown dupioni silk. If you're around
warm lights- like tungsten bulbs in the house, you'll swear
it's burgundy. I love silk that changes colors under different
light sources, it's always fun to see what it will look
like next. The medium, avocado greens of the butterfly
wings and the deep turquoise blue tips are a great contrast
to the warm brown. For the larger wings, I always make
sure to cut the fabric so the large mums will show. The
antennas are satin stitched and the pattern on the back
is top stitched in a free way so that each bag will be
slightly different. I used bright green satin for the lining.
